If you’re aware of fashion staples you’d know that most women own at least one LBD!
Each time I wear my silk/lace number (pictured) people stare, inquire as to whether I’m going on a date, and/or even somewhere special. I tend to wear it when I’m traveling (as it’s light weight), and I’ve been accosted by several TSA workers who’ve asked/stated; “Are you really wearing that in public? Girl, that’s negligee!... Is that a slip for bed?” during my full body scan...
I must admit that these are valid assumptions, yet I’ll defend myself by saying that I don’t care for pajamas and would feel uncomfortable/restricted in this piece if it were in fact a night gown. Additionally, I’ve seen people wear less at airports and even more provocative pieces and nothing was said to them!
Bare in mind that I always wear shorts underneath this piece and often an accompanying top to make this look more casual than sexy! PURPOSELY!
SEX IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I SELL! My outfits aren’t an invitation for anyone to objectify me and/or feel the need to publicly embarrass me due to their own projections/insecurities. Yes there are many in generations prior to mine who wouldn’t wear such apparel in public (including women in my own family who I respect and love) yet my LBD is in fact just a Little Black Dress inspired by a silk slip!
Being sexy also isn’t something that I consciously aim to be and isn’t a focus of mine! I made the following statement to a family friend in a recent conversation after being called “sexy”, “being sexy is something I do on accident!” She instantly burst out laughing and said “You just said that!”
I didn’t intend to appear arrogant, what I meant is; I don’t care about being sexy, I care about being happy, fun, appropriate, and free! This doesn’t mean naked, overly sexualized, and even loose with my body or appearance!
I wear what I want, when I want to, and believe that I have more than enough respect for myself to wear each outfit with style, grace, and elegance!
My point is this, we shouldn’t have to explain our style choices especially to those that already have their preconceived notion(s) of us! Not everyone cares for the attention their outfits garner whether they’re styled in a slip dress or sweatsuit!
Let’s be confident and convicted within the choices we make!
